The “Open Data in Class” competition, announced in collaboration of the Center for Education Technologies Western Balkans and Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development , Office for Information Technologies and eGovernment, with the support of UNDP Serbia and Oracle, declared the winners.
In the finals of the Open Data in Class competition for High Schools in Serbia, held on May 23, at the Science Technology Park in Belgrade, the first three places were won by the teams “Tesla Girls” from the School Center “Nikola Tesla” from Vrsac, “GimPi2” from high schools in Pirot and “Aurora” from the School of Economics and Trade in Kraljevo. The aim of the competition was to support teachers of computer science and other subjects to present open data concept to students, how it can be used and to motivate young people to consider a career in information technology. More than 180 secondary school teachers participated in the Open Data in Class project, 80 student teams, and the top ten teams presented their work in the finals of the competition.
Advisor to the Minister of Education for digitization in education and science Biljana Maric, thanked Center for Education Technologies Western Balkans, the Office for Information Technology and e-Government, UNDP, Computer Center of the University of Belgrade and colleagues from the Ministry of Education on a successfully completed project. She emphasized the importance of the project, as it helps to improve information education in high schools and vocational schools through the processing and use of open data from different fields. She added that improvement of teaching computer science also implies continuous professional development of teachers, which was achieved through the implementation of the project ‘Open Education in Serbia’. The project has contributed to the advancement and promotion of competitions in the field of IT and computing, and when it comes to open data, estimates are that the value of the open data market at EU level in 2020 will exceed EUR 300 billion.
